22 Mar MEDRC Welcome Alumni for First Alumni Lecture Series 2017

On March 22nd MEDRC Water Research marked World Water Day 2017 at our headquarters in Muscat, with a series of activities centered on this year’s theme of ‘Wastewater’.
Chief among the list was The MEDRC Alumni Lecture Series which saw 2 members of our MEDRC Alumni deliver lectures to an esteemed audience of Dignitaries, Ministerial Officials, Researchers and other Key Industry Stakeholders along with members of the Media.

Since its inception, MEDRC has led a multimillion dollar program of support for water research projects across the Middle East. These projects include Master’s and PhD water research fellowships awarded to talented young researches both locally, regionally and Internationally.

The honor of delivering a lecture was given to Ms Rinad Hamed, MEDRC Alumni, An – Najah National University, Palestine and Ms. Tasneem Tawalbeh, MEDRC Alumni, Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), Jordan. Ms Rinad who completed her MEDRC sponsored & supported Master’s thesis in 2015, delivered a lecture entitled ‘Phytoremediation for treatment of brackish water from groundwater wells in Palestine’.

Ms, Tasneem Tawalbeh delivered a lecture on ‘The water requirements of the Jordanian nuclear power plants: Reusing the treated wastewater as a cooling water source’. Ms. Tasneem finished her Master’s thesis with the support of MEDRC in 2016.
Also, attending as part of the Lecture Series was Ms Nadhira Salim Al Harrasi, Department of Soils, Water and Agricultural Engineering, College of Agricultural & Marine Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), Oman, who delivered a lecture on ‘Greywater treatment and reuse’ and MEDRC’s own Research Officer, Ms. Ayisha Al – Hinaai who lectured on ‘Wastewater treatment and reuse in Oman’.

The MEDRC Fellowship programme is a unique initiative designed to support research capacity in Jordan and Palestine. It offers brilliant young researchers with the aptitude but without the means, the chance to further their studies in the field of water research. MEDRC recognizes and supports excellence in water research in universities in the MENA region and has long believed that investing in talented students will have a hugely beneficial impact on the regions ability to work towards a secure and sustainable supply of water for all.
