In 2022, MEDRC’s mandate was expanded by its member states to include wider issues relating to the environment. Water and solutions to water scarcity cannot be effectively considered without factoring in environmental issues around energy and climate change. In the MENA region especially with its heavy dependency on desalination and wastewater technology, water is a function of energy. MEDRC’s expanding portfolio in this area includes research into the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus and the effects of climate change and adaptation. MEDRC also supports in-country dialogues and roundtables bringing these issues to the forefront of conversations across the MENA region.
