Established out of the Middle East Peace Process in 1996, MEDRC is an International Organization, headquartered in the Sultanate of Oman that utilizes the environment as an entry point for peace. MEDRC’s work is guided by three core mandates:
1. To support the Middle East Peace Process
2. To generate solutions to freshwater scarcity
3. To become a model organization for States seeking to use transboundary environmental issues in the service of a peace process.
The MEDRC Headquarters is in Muscat, where it operates a state-of-the-art technical research facility. In delivering its mission, MEDRC works at the intersection of water, environment and peace.
MEDRC is an International Organization established to address two of the greatest global grand challenges we face today – environment and peace.
With a mandate to be a model organization for states seeking to use transboundary environmental issues for peace, we conduct research, development cooperation, training and peacebuilding activities. All countries today face a growing threat from climate and conflict. In response, we need new approaches to resolve these cross border pressures. That means not just narrow technical environmental solutions, but new multilateral models based on fairness and equality.
