Expert International Workshop on Reducing Desalination Cost Held at MEDRC, Muscat

International Experts Examine Oman and Korea Case Studies 

The Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) has held an international expert workshop focused on reducing the cost and increasing the supply of desalinated water. 

The expert gathering was held against the backdrop of increased pressure regionally and globally to increase the access and affordability of fresh water. Experts focused on two case studies – Oman and Korea. Oman’s experience in regulation and privatization were discussed in detail as was Korea’s experience in reducing costs through research and development.

Addressing the case of Oman Eng. Naif Ali Al Abri from OPWP provided a comprehensive overview on “The Omani model: Regulation and Privatization of Electricity and Related Water Sector’. 

Focusing on the Korean experience, Prof. In S. Kim, Director of Global Desalination Research Center (GDRC), Professor at School of Environmental Science & Engineering Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), gave a presentation on ‘How Research and Government Desalination Strategy can Reduce the Cost.’ Professor In was joined by a senior delegation of Korean government, industry and academic leaders.

MEDRC Center Director Ciarán Ó Cuinn congratulated Oman and Korea for their leadership in the search for solutions to fresh water scarcity and announced that MEDRC would be expanded its events and workshop activities in the months ahead.
