The Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) is called to play its role as a recognized regional center of excellence that boosts research on desalination such as research on RO membrane technologies and renewable energies based desalination. Its vision aims at becoming the market place of choice for exchanging and transferring knowledge on the most innovative and efficient technologies of desalination between and within the MENA countries, including the hosting country Oman.

MEDRC Research Program is about bringing the best regional and global expertise together to help find solutions to water scarcity challenge. It is about developing the researchers of tomorrow - scientists from the region who will lead our efforts to secure safe, secure and sustainable water for the people of the Middle East into the future. It is about raising the standard of living of the people of the region, and contributing to the peace in the region, and finally it is about providing a replicable policy response to support international research cooperation. It aims specifically at conducting, facilitating, promoting, coordinating and supporting basic & applied research in the water desalination field including: Thermal Desalination, Membrane Desalination, Non-Traditional Desalination, use of renewable energy, Environment impact, etc. The main mission is to stress the technical aspect of pushing desalination technology forward, and thereby lowering its costs, and providing environmentally friendly solutions.

Since 1996 MEDRC has supported 200 water research projects involving the best regional and global expertise together along with regional researchers from 34 countries and includes Master's & PhD water research fellowships awarded to more than 115 regional nationals for study internationally, regionally and locally. More than 300 publications have been produced and countless expert workshops, knowledge transfer and capacity building programs have been conducted across the MENA region.

More efficiant desalination, better water reuse and a shift to renewable technologies are urgently needed to enable us rise to this challenge of fresh water scarcity.

Our research program is about bringing the best regional and global expertise together to help find solutions to that challenge. It is about developing the researchers of tomorrow - scientists from the region who will lead our efforts to secure safe, secure and sustainable water for the people of the Middle East into the future.

The Center's Research Program is based on Seven Research Program Goals:

  1. Decrease the cost of desalination
  2. Develop productive partnerships and cooperation
  3. Develop sustainable desalination technologies
  4. Improve communications in the desalination community
  5. Develop human resources for application of desalination and foster international cooperation in research activities
  6. Utilize limited regional and international research resources
  7. Maximize technology transfer
